This colorful playroom was probably one of the most fun projects I’ve done in our home yet…even though it took me a good six months to complete. There’s two reasons for that; one I have two kids under the age of five, and two those built-ins took four coats of paint!
We are very fortunate to have a space in our home totally designated to the kids. When we first moved in, this room was serving as part office, part “I don’t know where to put this random object” type of room. You know exactly the type of room I’m talking about…clutter city.
Since I work from home quite often, I struggled with the decision of making it an office for myself or a playroom for the kids. However, having toys dispersed all throughout the house helped us make that decision fairly quickly.
The room centered around these beautiful built-ins. They anchor the room, and I knew I could do fun things with the shelves. Unfortunately, I did not get the best before photos, butI did find this terrible camera photo for reference.
For the paint, I kept the built-ins and walls neutral with a light gray and bright white, knowing that the kids toys and accessories would add perfect pops of color. Probably my most favorite accessory was adding the black polka dot wall stickers. They were an inexpensive touch adding a fun element to the space.
The yellow and blue striped baskets work out great for storing paints, stickers, and other crafts. By keeping these items up high, the kids aren’t able to get to the messy stuff without asking first. The Ikea cube shelving helps with storing all the little random toys that kids seem to accumulate.
Above all, I was able to gain so much storage space in this room, as it truly exceeded my needs. Now, everything has its place, just the way I like it. If I run out of room in here that just means it’s time to purge!
In the end, everyone is so happy with how the room turned out. Plus the kids love having their own personal space to explore and create in.
